Sie machte die westliche Welt mit der osteuropäischen Avantgarde bekannt: Antonina Gmurzynska, 1923 in Warschau geboren. Sie war in einem kultivierten Elternhaus aufgewachsen. Wie bereits ihre Mutter hatte sie Kunstgeschichte studiert und danach an einem polnischen Museum gearbeitet. 1964 wallte es der Zufall, dass sich Antonina Gmurzynska, ihr Mann und ihre Tochter unabhangig voneinander im Ausland befanden. »Meine Mutter war bei Verwandten in Dänemark, mein Stiefvater bei einem Ärztekongress in Schweden. Ich war damals 13 Jahre alt und auf einem französischen Internat«, erzählt die Tochter Krystyna.

Since joining Galerie Gmurzynska in Cologne 10 years ago, Mathias Rastorfer has helped propel the gallery into the elite circle of international players capable of competing with the major auction houses for top material. Now, as gallery director and co-owner-with Krystyna Gmurzynska, Rastorfer is responsible for mounting well-documented, museum-quality exhibitions devoted to specialized fields (such as the Russian avant-garde), or to a single artist in collaboration with the artist's estate (such as Sonia and Robert Delaunay and Yves Klein).
